It was back to The Cardinals Hat in Lincoln for Wantsum Brewery's Golgotha oatmeal stout. It's a new brewery for me so I had to do some Googling and it turns out they're based near Canterbury and are nearly 10 years old. They seem to have a decent range now but Golgotha is the darkest. Just as a side note apparently Golgotha is the hill Jesus was buried in. Moving on from the history lesson Wantsum Brewery Golgotha pours pretty much black with a really good just off white head. No matter what happens after this I have to say it's a really good looking beer.
Wantsum Brewery Golgotha has a roasted malts aroma mixed with a little Blackcurrant. The texture is seriously smooth although it's not quite as full bodied as I'd have liked coming in with a just above medium feel. The taste is actually pretty good. There's the promised slightly smoky malts along with some vague blackcurrant and liquorice notes. Golgotha is a really good stout that just lacks a little bit of extra texture, and a little bit of a more unusual taste. As oatmeal stouts go this is a really good example of the style, but it's a little plain. I'm going to give Wantsum Brewery Golgotha a very good, but not unique enough to really stand out 8.5 out of 10.
