Welcome to the Drink in the Sights Utopian British Lager Beer Review. Yea that's right this is my second lager review in 2 days but don't worry I'll be back to proper beers soon enough. I don't know much about the Utopian Brewery except that it's based in Devon and is very proud to be British. They have British Lager, British Pilsner, British unfiltered lager and British Dark Lager pouring from their taps so I guess Brexit wont affect their business model too much. I guess it is good to buy local products so maybe I should appreciate all the Britishness but it all sounds a little Nigel Farage to me and that can't be good.
Utopian British Lager comes in a 440ml light blue can with Britannia somewhat inevitably on the front, but only gently sketched on so you do struggle to make her out which is a little annoying, if you're entire marketing ploy is look how British we are surely she should be more prominent? The can points out that the beer is made from 100% British ingredients and contains 4.7% alcohol which isn't bad I guess. What I do enjoy though other than the rather optimistic 'discover perfection' tagline is that the beer is described as 'Bavarian Helles style' so just like the royal family this British institution is actually pretty German really.
The beer pours a very clear sun yellow with a white lacing head, so it looks like most lagers really. The aroma is actually really nice though with some floral notes and almost certainly some banana coming through. There's also a subtle maltyness to the smell which bodes quite well that this might have something to it. Utopian British lager has a very nice light refreshing texture too which makes it really drinkable on a warm day so things are certainly starting to look up.
The taste very much matches the aroma with a light smattering of hops with some banana undertones and a nice malty finish, as lagers go this is actually one of the better ones. Sure it's still a lager which means it's never going to be a 10 out of 10 beer but I'm going to give British Lager from Utopian Brewery a very respectable 7.5 out of 10 which is about as much as a lager can get in a beer review. If you're looking for a decent cheap lager that isn't one of the usual tasteless big brand offerings Utopian British Lager might just be the one for you.
