Welcome to the Drink in the Sights Triple Choc from Saltaire Beer Review. I'm not actually 100% sure where I picked this beer up from but after a day to forget at work I decided I wanted something alcoholic and something chocolate to take my mind off it so this seemed like the obvious choice. Saltaire are an award winning 15 year old brewery based in Shipley, West Yorkshire with a decent beer range. I've not really tried a huge amount of their beers but as a dark beer drinker with a sweet tooth Triple Choc really should be right up my street.
Triple Choc from Saltaire Brewery comes in a pretty dull 500ml bottle which proclaims Triple Choc is a 'moreish dark beer which compliments English Fuggle hops with rich chocolate decadence.' I do like a bit of decadence in my life occasionally. The beer contains a fairly standard these days 4.8% alcohol so at this point nothing really stands out except that it should be seriously chocolatey. Triple Choc pours a very dark black with a nice tan head which quickly fades to lacing, it looks decent but I wish the head lasted a bit better.
The beers aroma is slightly more roasted coffee bean than I expected and as a result slightly less chocolate. This isn't to say that there's not a good level of rich dark chocolate, just I was really expecting that to be the absolutely dominant force but instead it seems to share the stage with the coffee. What is a little disappointing is the texture of Triple Choc. I was expecting this to be a seriously thick full bodied beer but instead it has a more medium bodied texture which just doesn't feel quite right for a beer promising decadence.
Fortunately despite the slightly watered down texture the Triple Choc really does exactly what it says on the label. This is a seriously tasty, chocolatey beer which you could have as a dessert instead of any chocolate cake and not feel like you're missing out. If you try hard enough you'll find a few hints of vanilla and coffee in there, but make no mistake this is all about the chocolate. Personally I really like a beer that delivers what it promises, and this one does that in spades. I'm going to give Triple choc from Saltaire Brewery a very, very good 9 out of 10. I'd have probably gone slightly higher if it had just a little more texture to it. Well done Saltaire.
