Is it just me or does virtually every brewery have a coffee flavoured stout these days? Suffice it to say this offering by Titanic Brewery isn't the first and wont be the last Cappuccino Stout you find on your beer quest, but given that Titanic from Stoke on Trent are a pretty reliable and award winning brewery maybe this one will stand out? I should say from the start I'm not a coffee drinker, I just don't get it, but I appreciate a lot of you will enjoy a warm pick me up instead of a cold one every now and again. I'm drinking this beer just after New Years Eve in 2020 the year of lockdowns which preceded the year of more lockdowns.
The beer comes in an upsettingly small 330ml bottle with the now very familiar Titanic logo and brief description summing up Cappuccino Stout in 3 words... Coffee, Roasted, Black. This really doesn't feel like one for the none coffee drinkers but hey I'll try most things and all beers once. There's a 4.5% alcohol volume, which if I'm honest for a coffee stout is possibly just below average, plus it's only a 330ml bottle so you would have thought they could have squeezed an extra percent in. Still I have to say there's nothing wrong with the presentation
The beer pours jet black, as a good stout should, with a fairly lively creamy head. This is a pretty good looking beer and it already hits one of its three key words, so it's doing ok so far. I do like a beer that does what it says on the bottle. Coffee and Roasted come very quickly after to complete the key word hat trick. From the moment you take off the bottle cap you'll smell the pungent aroma of roasted coffee beans, honestly if you want your front room to smell like a coffee shop this is the beer to open. It's a really strong, but impressive smell. Everything is going well so far.
It's fair to say the taste matches the aroma, plus there's a really nice dark chocolate taste in there too. I've asked a couple of coffee drinking friends and they tell me this really does smell and taste like a Cappuccino so well done Titanic Brewery. It's certainly fair to say that if you want an alcoholic, cold, or room temperature coffee this is probably the ideal beer for you. The problem is that I don't really want that. Sorry. The other problem is as I mentioned at the start it doesn't feel overly unique.
These are minor issues though, and very much down to my personal taste. I have to score Cappuccino Stout from Titanic Brewery quite highly because it does exactly what it says on the bottle, so you certainly wont be disappointed. It's also one of the best examples of a coffee stout I've tried, and despite them not been to my taste I've had a fair few. I'm going to give Cappuccino Stout 7.5 out of 10. It really is a very good beer and if you like coffee I'm sure you'll love it.
