I came across Swirl from Shiny Brewery while visiting The Yard of Ale which is one of the Best pubs in Peterborough. Shiny Brewery are a Derby based company who do lots of gluten free beer, unfortunately this isn't one of them so no bonus points for Shiny this time. They've been going since 2012 and I've started to find their beers all over the place so they must be doing pretty well. Swirl is their 4.5% porter and I do love a porter so I had high hopes for this. The beer pours jet black with no head of any real note but it certainly looks the part.
Swirl has a predominantly chocolate based aroma so this feels like one for people with a sweet tooth, and I'm very much one of those people. This is a pretty thick and creamy porter probably due to the lactose, which I loved. The taste is very much that of a very good chocolate beer mixed with enough vanilla to be noticeable, but not so much it clashes. Unlike with other chocolate and vanilla beers where they seem cancel each other out the vanilla and chocolate work pretty well together, there's even a slightly smoky finish at the end just to add an extra twist to Swirl. I really liked Swirl from Shiny Brewery so I'm going to give it an excellent 9 out of 10.
