I found Steel City Brewing Why is the Rum Gone? In the Crow Inn in Sheffield, which after all is the Steel City. They're an interesting brewery in that they have no base of operations and instead use other companies brewing equipment, create a few beers and move on. They've been doing this since 2009, so it seems they're doing ok. Steel City's Why is the Rum Gone? Is a 5.4% rum barrel aged stout, and if that doesn't sound like a fun beer to you I don't know what will. The beer pours jet black with a healthy, creamy white head. Lets be honest it looks amazing.
Why is the Rum Gone? Has an aroma of treacle and rum, and I think that's the first time I've ever described a beers smell with those words, so it's unique if nothing else. The texture is seriously full bodied, as a good stout should be, and full of creamy goodness. The taste is much stronger than you'd expect from a 5.4% stout, it's more like a 8-9% taste, which isn't a bad thing. It's also much sweeter than I expected with oodles of dark chocolate seeping through, expertly mixed with the rum flavour. It's a really nice and pretty unusual beer. I'm going to give Steel City Why is the Rum Gone? A very good 9 out of 10. I'm not really sure what it could have done different to make it a 10, maybe it just tastes very slightly too strong.
