I found Rutland Beast from Grainstore Brewery on a drinking trip in Peterborough. The brewery is based in Oakham which is about half way between Peterborough and Leicester so I'm going to class it as a local brew. Grainstore been going since 1995 and has a tap room on site so I'll try to give that a visit at some point in the future. Clocking in at 5.3% Rutland Beast is one of the strongest milds I've had, but I've never been one to complain that a beer has too much alcohol in it. The beer pours a dark brown with quite a small tan head.
Rutland Beast has quite a nice dark fruits aroma mixed with some apple notes. The texture is just above medium giving it a decent enough feel while the taste is very much dark fruits dominated with some good earthy malts coming through. I quite enjoyed Rutland Beast, it's not a beer that will get your heart racing, but it's a good strong mild to keep you warm on a chilly day. I'm going to give Rutland Beast from Grainstore Brewery a good solid 7.5 out of 10.
