I think by now everyone knows 30 year old brewery Black Sheep in Yorkshire, and if you don't and you're a beer lover where have you been? I picked up this bottle of Riggwelter Yorkshire Ale a little while ago and drank it during Englands game with the Czech Republic in Euro 2021. The beer comes in a nice 500ml bottle showing a ram on its back, which apparently means it's riggwelted, hence the name. Coming in at 5.7% alcohol Riggwelter is a pretty strong offering and I tend to find I need that when watching England. The beer pours a dark mahogany colour with a reasonable head that lasts surprisingly well.
The aroma is also appealing with a good level of malts and some dark fruit smells mixed with a splash of caramel. While the texture is slightly lighter than I expected, coming in about medium bodied, the taste is very much that of a traditional dark ale with some lovely dark fruit notes, a bit of caramel and a whole bucket load of tasty malts. Sadly enjoyable as the beer was the aftertaste was a little unpleasant, not so much so that I wouldn't drink it again, but it was enough to knock it from a very good beer down to just a pretty good beer. I'm going to give Riggwelter from Black Sheep Brewery a good respectable 7 out of 10. If you fancy a decent traditional dark ale this one will do you nicely.
