Welcome to the Drink in the Sights Plum Porter from Harpers ALDI Beer Review. I picked this 500ml bottle up from ALDI just before Christmas, and had to ask the pretty simple question how does it compare to Titanic's excellent and iconic Plum Porter? Well lets start with the basics the bottle says it's Harper's but really it's an ALDI brew that clocks in at a fairly average 4.8%, just 0.1% less than the beer it's clearly trying to mimic. Plum Porter from Harpers pours a very dark red with a reasonable foamy off white head, so it looks alright.
Sure enough there's a plum aroma, but nothing like as powerful as other plum porters. Similarly the body is actually quite weak, almost watery, which is never a good thing in a dark beer. Fortunately though despite the flaws the taste isn't bad, although it's certainly not as flavoursome as the Titanic versions. You'll get plum and red berry notes, which are more than pleasant enough, but they are pretty mild. Plum Porter from Harpers is basically a watered down version of the classic Plum Porter, it's not a bad beer, but it's lighter than it should be in terms of texture, taste, aroma, and well pretty much everything. Despite all this I still quite enjoyed the beer though, so it can have a very respectable 7.5 out of 10.
