Just to clarify at the start this is actually now brewed by Brewpoint in Bedford but they decided to keep the Charles Wells name. Anyway I found Origin by Charles Wells in The Queens Head in Peterborough which is one of the quirkiest Peterborough pubs. If I'm honest Origin was the only beer on at the time so that was very much the one I had to choose, plus if something has the name Charles and the word origin in it I think it has to be looked at. By pale ale standards Origin pours quite dark almost more like a bitter with a decent enough white head.
At 3.7% Origin falls very much into the session beer group. The beers aroma is quite fruity with some citrus notes coming through, so it certainly smells more like a pale ale than it looks. Origin sadly has a slightly watery texture to it which isn't something I really look for in a beer, but it's quite refreshing. On top of the fruity notes there's a few biscuit malts coming through in the taste which sets it out a little bit against the usual standard citrus pale ales. I'm going to give Origin from Charles Wells 6.5 out of 10. It certainly has its place as a decent session pale ale but it's still a bit watery, and frankly a bit dull.
