Newby Wyke Brewery did a tap takeover of my local Wetherspoons so I thought I'd go check them out. The brewery is based in Grantham which is only about 40 minutes from Lincoln so it's very much a local brew for me. The brewery have been going since 1998 and I often spot their beers around the city. Newby Wyke Brewery King Topaz is a 4.2% golden ale with a small white head which dissipates so quickly you have to wonder why it bothered forming in the first place. The beer has a less than spectacular aroma with some grapefruit, and general floral notes.
Newby Wyke Brewery King Topaz has a very thin body, which makes it very easy to drink, quite refreshing, but also very watery. The taste is similarly light, and watery. You'll get a little bit of grapefruit, some lemon, and not much else. I guess if it was 25 degrees outside and you'd just walked a long way Newby Wyke Brewery King Topaz may be exactly what you need, but on a cool November evening it's just really boring. If you're looking for a taste sensation Newby Wyke Brewery King Topaz really isn't for you. 4 out of 10.
