I found Lud from Neepsend Brewery in The Queens Crafthouse which is probably my favourite pub in Doncaster. As Neepsend Brew Co are a Sheffield based brewery this very much counted as drinking a local brew, and I do like to sample the local stuff. The brewery have been going since 2015 and Lud is their London Porter. Why exactly a Sheffield based brewery are making a London porter I'm not exactly sure, but here it is. Lud clocks in at a distinctly average 4.8% alcohol and pours just off black with a small white head.
Lud has a promising but quite faint aroma of chocolate and liquorice and the texture is quite thick and smooth almost more like a stout. Unfortunately the aroma doesn't really translate very well to the taste. You know when a beer just doesn't taste quite right? This is one of those times. I can't even put my finger on exactly what was wrong and I usually love a slightly chocolate based porter, but this just didn't really work. Don't get me wrong I finished it, I always do, but I don't think I'd bother again. I'm going to give Lud from Neepsend Brew Co 4 out of 10. I actually wanted to mark it lower, but it seemed unfair until I figure out what it was I didn't like about it.
