I picked up this pint of Little Critters Sleepy Badger at the Dove and Rainbow which is one of the best bars in Sheffield, and one of very few pubs I've visited that has a coffin as part of the decor. Little Critters are a Sheffield based brewery so I was happily drinking a local brew. They've only been seriously brewing since 2015 and have already made a bit of a name for themselves. Sleepy Badger from Little Critters Brewery is a 4.5% oatmeal stout that pours a very dark brown with pretty much no head. I'm a stout fan, but this one just looks a bit too pale and the lack of head just makes it look like a glass of cola.
Fortunately Sleepy Badger smells better than it looks. There's some roasted coffee notes, some chocolate, and some liquorice coming through. As expected from the look the texture while reasonably smooth is far to light for a proper stout, especially an oatmeal one. This really is a bit of a mixed bag as the taste is half decent. The chocolate and coffee tastes compliment each other reasonably well, but I can't get away from the light texture, it's like drinking a pale ale. I'm going to give Little Critters Sleepy Badger 5 out of 10. It has its high points, and it's low points, which balance each other out to just make it an ok ish beer.
