I found Liquorice Tattoo from Weird Beard Brew Co in the Blind Tiger which is one of the best Peterborough Pubs at the princely sum of £4 for a third but I figured at 9% a third was probably enough. The brewery is based in London where they've been brewing for nearly 10 years. I gather Liquorice Tattoo is a one off batch so I guess that's where the price tag comes in. The beer pours about as black as any beer you're every likely to find with about the smallest head you're every likely to find. The aroma naturally has a bit of an alcohol kick but sure enough there is some sweet liquorice coming through.
Liquorice Tattoo is very much an imperial stout with a bit of a twist and it may well be the first oatmeal imperial stout I've had. The texture is suitably rich and full bodied while the taste certainly delivers the usual imperial stout kick. While this is sweeter and to be fair nicer than most 9% beers I've had I still think they didn't go strong enough on the liquorice which after all is meant to be the main selling point. Sure it's there, but it's not the completely dominant flavour I was hoping for. Regardless I'm going to give Liquorice Tattoo from Weird Beard Brew Co 8 out of 10 it's a genuinely impressive drink, but it should be given what I paid for it.
