I found Half Moon Brewery's Dark Masquerade in The Sheffield Tap, which tops my list of the best Sheffield pubs. It really is an exceptional bar inside the train station. As Half Moon Brewery are based in York I'm claiming this as drinking a local brew, it's only about an hour from Sheffield after all, and it's all in Yorkshire. The microbrewery have been going since 2013 so they're starting to class as an established brand, but I think this is the first of their beers I've had. Sure enough Dark Masquerade pours pretty dark with a nice little just off white head.
As Dark Masquerade is a mild I doubt you're expecting a big percentage, and sure enough the beer only clocks in at 3.6%, but I don't mind that when I'm on a session. You'll get a light chocolate and roasted coffee bean aroma from Dark Masquerade along with a nice creamy texture. What you wont get is an overly exciting taste. Sure there's some roasted malts and a little bit of chocolate, but it's a little bit bland. That's not to say Dark Masquerade doesn't have its place, and as part of a session it's a nice low risk option to keep you going. I'm going to give Half Moon's Dark Masquerade a decent, but not extravagant 6.5 out of 10.
