I bought this pint of Gatekeeper from Buxton Brewery at their Brewery Tap, which is certainly one of the best pubs in Buxton. The brewery is only a couple of miles out of the town centre so it's well worth the trek if you're ever in that area of Derbyshire. Buxton Brewery have been brewing since 2011 so I was there in the year of their 10th birthday, which I guess is nice. Gatekeeper is a 3.8% porter that pours pretty much completely black with a rather pathetic lacing head. Fortunately the roasted malts aroma with a splash of coffee and chocolate more than make up for the lack of a decent head.
One small digression I feel the need to make here is to point out that I can't hear the name Gatekeeper without thinking of the first Ghostbusters film, so I found that quite distracting. Anyway back to the beer. Gatekeeper is a little bit thinner than most porters, but it was a hot day so I didn't really mind that. I really liked the taste though. It's a proper old style porter that lets the roasted malts do the hard work with the chocolate and coffee just providing a little bit of depth. There's also a hint of a smoky finish which I loved. I'm going to give Gatekeeper from Buxton Brewery a very impressive 9 out of 10. If you're looking for a proper porter look no further.
