Welcome to the Drink in the Sights Smokey Joe Porter from Fab Brewery Beer Review. FAB Brewery in Lincolnshire have nothing to do with the Thunderbirds, which is a shame, but they are one of my favourite little breweries so I'm very much looking forward to trying their Smokey Joe Porter. If you asked me to pick a style of beer I couldn't live without porters would be right up there, and anyone who has read some of my previous posts on smoky beers will know I love them too, so this really should be right on track for me. Just for the record FAB stands for Ferry Ales Brewery as the beers are brewed on Ferry Hill Farm. I picked this bottle up from the local Co-Op to try and cheer myself up on another dark, freezing cold, January lockdown day. Lets hope it does the trick.
Smokey Joe comes in a nice 500ml bottle with a steam train on the front, which as Smokey Joe was a train makes sense. The beer has a 4.9% alcohol content so it's one that you'll know you're drinking, but shouldn't do too much damage. Smokey Joe pours beautifully, I mean just look at the picture above, it's a stunning beer. It's as black as night with exactly the right size head for a porter, honestly I'm quite excited about drinking this, and that doesn't happen too often these days.
Even the smell of Smokey Joe is luring me in. There's a strong smoked aroma, but also scents of dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans. It's a pretty strong scent, which I don't mind when it's a pleasant one. With some smoked beers all you can smell is the smoke, but this one seems more subtle, I really like the aroma. Really everything is shaping up for this beer to enter my beers hall of fame, plus it's only brewed a few miles from where I live and I do like to support my fellow yellow bellies from time to time. Don't worry though if it turns out to be rubbish this will be the only one I buy.
It's not rubbish, and I will be buying more. The texture is rich and full bodied, and the taste matches the smell perfectly. Everything you'd want in a porter is in this bottle. The dark chocolate, the coffee, and the smoky malts are all blended together to perfection. Honestly if a bigger brewer was making this it'd be everywhere. The taste is excellent with just enough chocolatey goodness to offset the powerful smoked flavour. As you can probably tell I love Smokey Joe from FAB and have absolutely no issues with giving it a perfect 10 out of 10.
