Welcome to the Drink in the Sights Efes Draft Beer Review. I'm sure that many years ago when I was in Cyprus I had Efes Draft on draught, but I really can't remember it was nearly 20 years ago. Just for the record, because I looked it up draft is just the American version of draught. I thought it probably was but wanted to check. Anyway, I didn't go back to Cyprus to find Efes Draft instead I found it on the shelves of Home Bargains in Lincoln, they do have some random stuff. Efes are actually a Turkish brewery which adds to my belief that I had some in Cyprus. If I'm honest other than that I don't know much about them.
One thing I do love about Efes Draft is the bottle. To be honest I like any bottle that's a bit different, and this little fatty is certainly different. It looks more like something from an apothecary than a beer bottle but the cool wood effect label just makes it look fun and olde. The beer is described as 'expertly brewed for a light hoppy aroma and refreshingly smooth, rich taste.' I guess that sounds alright. Efes Draft is 5% alcohol, so probably a little above average, but not enough to do a huge amount of damage with one bottle.
Efes Draft pours much lighter than I expected, it's almost a wheat beer yellow with a small white lacing where the head should be. I'm not really sure what to make of this. The aroma is similarly odd. It smells sweet and malty, with some floral hops thrown in for good measure, but for some reason it just doesn't really seem right despite not been unpleasant. It's almost somewhere between an ale and a lager. It actually reminds me a bit of a light Newcastle Brown, which is another beer I've not had in ages, for good reason.
The texture is light, smooth and a bit lager esque. The taste meanwhile isn't really very pleasant at all. It really just tastes like a malty grainy lager with an odd soapy taste no-ones really likely to enjoy. It's really not anything to write home about, unless what you're going to write is along the lines of if you see Efes Draft and it's that or a random lager give it a go, but if there's any ales or craft beers on go to them first. I'm going to give Efes Draft 3 out of 10. It's just quite a weird, unpleasant drink which you're probably best off avoiding.
