Ebony from Strathaven Ales is an oatmeal stout I picked up from the gorgeous Cafe Royal in Edinburgh, honestly it really is one of those propely stunning pubs you have to visit when you head up there. Not surprisingly Strathaven Ales are based in Strathaven, which isn't a million miles from Glasgow. They're a proper old family business so it's nice to see them doing well. Ebony from Strathaven Ales is a just off black 4.4% oatmeal stout with pretty much no head, so there's nothing about the look or the alcohol content that will blow your mind.
The beer has a chocolate and coffee aroma with a little bit of liquorice coming through too. The body is disappointingly thin for a beer this colour. It's also really sweet, but not in a particularly good way. There's a bit of a mash up of chocolate, liquorice, and a little coffee blended together, but not in an overly pleasant way. I didn't really enjoy Ebony from Strathaven Ales much at all if I'm honest, so I can only give it 3.5 out of 10.
