Given that I had no idea Derby Brewing Company existed before receiving this beer as a Christmas gift from my brother I was a little surprised to get it. Blood Wolf American Red does sound fun though and after a quick look around Derby Brewing Companies website I like their style, which basically means they seem to do a fair few dark ales. You can take a tour of their brewery, and as it's only a couple of hours from me I just might get round to it one day. Anyway now that I know Derby Brewing Company exists it's time we talked about Blood Wolf.
I love the can, sure it's only a 330ml which is always depressing, but it looks great. The half wolf skull, half red wolf picture looks like The Terminator meets Little Red Riding Hood, only much more sinister. I don't know I've always been drawn to what would be described as Goth stuff and this fits the bill nicely. The beer pours really lively so be careful especially as the head sticks around a while. The body is a very dark browny/red which is rather less blood coloured than I had imagined prior to pouring. It's not a bad looking beer to be fair.
The aroma is pretty good too. There's lots of toffee in there and probably some caramel too. You'll also get quite a heavy roasted malts smell coming in slightly later, but blending nicely with the sweet toffee. Blood Wolf contains 4.8% alcohol so we're not looking at anything too blood curdling here, just a nice standard session red ale alcohol content. I don't think I've ever had a beer with quite so much of a toffee smell before, so this could be interesting. Fortunately I'm an Everton fan so I do like toffee. This could be good.
The taste very much matches the smell. The toffee flavour comes through extremely well while the malts balance it out nicely ensuring you remember you're drinking a beer not sucking a sweet. Exactly what any of this has to do with a blood wolf I'm not quite sure, but hey I guess that's just modern marketing for you. Given that this is my first taste of Derby Brewing Company I have to say I'm impressed, this really is a well balanced, easy to drink, tasty, sweet beer. I'm going to give Blood Wolf from Derby Brewing Company 8 out of 10. Certainly worth trying if you have a sweet tooth.
