I had this 330ml can of Common Grounds from Magic Rock Brewery during a short tasting session at a friends house. The brewery are Huddersfield based and have been brewing since 2011 so happy 10th birthday to them. All Magic Rock cans have a similar modern arty look which makes them fairly easy to spot. The can says Common Grounds is a 5.4% coffee porter with chocolate and vanilla, so in theory it sounds great. The beer pours pretty close to black with a small just off white head, so it looks the part as a porter.
Not to surprisingly the aroma is mainly coffee beans, but it's a surprisingly weak smell. Often coffee stouts and porters have a really powerful scent that wakes you up like that fist whiff of coffee in the morning, but that's not really the case here. The texture feels very light and watery for a porter so that's not great either. Like the smell the taste isn't really as strong as I'd like. There's a bit of a coffee taste, but again it's quite understated, with some light chocolate flavours coming through too, but again they aren't very strong or exciting. As 5.4% beers go this is a bit tasteless, and as coffee porters go it's very tasteless. Common Grounds isn't a terrible beer, it's just quite a bland one, so I can't really give Common Grounds from Magic Rock Brewery more than 5 out of 10.
