Welcome to the Drink in the Sights Citra from Oakham Ales Beer Review. Oakham Ales are a nearly 30 year old Peterborough based brewery who seem to be doing reasonably well as I often see their beers on tap especially when I go drinking in Leeds. If you see one of their beers in your local it'll more than likely be Citra. I picked this bottle up for about £1 from B&M in Lincoln along with Inferno which is Oakham's golden ale offering. I have a couple of friends who swear by Citra so I'm quite looking forward to trying this despite Inferno turning out to be a bit of a damp squib.
Citra from Oakham Ales comes in a very pretty 500ml bottle featuring what looks like a not particularly happy hop monster. I guess he knows he's about to be brewed. The beer is described as 'light gold in colour, bursting with citrus and tropical hop flavours and sensationally refreshing.' It also says this is the first UK beer brewed from 100% Citra hops, so I guess if you like Citra hops you'll probably love this beer. The beer clocks in with a reasonably potent 4.6% alcohol content so it could be quite good fun given that it claims to be a session IPA.
Citra pours a very clear, very pale, light gold with a rubbish virtually none existent head. Is it just me who thinks more effort should be made to maintain a decent head on a beer? The aroma very much lives up to the Citra name with plenty of lemon and lime scents coming through. It's quite a nice smell, a bit like a fresh lemonade, which kind of leaves me thinking I should be drinking this in the summer not a freezing cold April evening in lockdown. The beers texture is about right for a light ale, it's thin but unlike so many others not so thin that it feels watery.
Citra tastes pretty much exactly how it smells. There's a nice pleasant lemon and lime citrus taste, but it's not as tart and in your face as some citrus based IPA's and I personally find this a bit of a relief. You'll probably find some elderflower and grapefruit tastes blended in too and they all work really well together. I'm generally not an IPA lover but I'd happily drink Citra again. I'm going to give Citra from Oakham Ales 7.5 out of 10. I can't think of many IPA's I'd rather drink than Citra and I can see why my light drinking friends love it.
