Welcome to the Drink in the Sights Costa Rican Coffee Extra Porter Beer Review. Buxton Brewery have been going for just over a decade now and not surprisingly they are based in Buxton, which isn't a million miles away from the Peak District so I imagine it's quite a nice scenic area. They've got their own taproom on site so that might be worth checking out if you're ever in the area. Anyway I'm pretty sure this beer came from Morrison's, but if I'm honest I'm starting to lose track, maybe I need to finish the beers I've got before I order more?
Costa Rican Coffee Extra Porter comes in quite a cool light brown 440ml can featuring some coffee beans and a white flower. The beer is described as 'a rich, smooth porter brewed with cacao nibs, vanilla beans and Costa Rican Villa Sarchi coffee' and contains a whopping 7.4% alcohol which is enough to get anyone's attention. What I would say from the start is that I have no idea what makes a porter 'extra porter' so if anyone does know please message me below as I'm really curious now.
The beer pours almost completely jet black with a reasonable brown caramel head which recedes to lacing. It looks alright. As a none coffee drinker I'm relieved that the aroma isn't too overpowering. Given the extra porter promise and the 7.4% alcohol I was expecting a real hit when I gave this a sniff but actually there's just a pleasant, mild coffee bean aroma backed up by some vanilla and maybe a little chocolate. Up until smelling this beer I had thought it wouldn't really be for me but now I'm starting to get my hopes up.
As with the aroma the taste isn't as extreme as I expected. Sure there's plenty of roasted coffee beans in there, but it's not over powering and it's well balanced with vanilla and dark chocolate. This is also a pretty smooth beer with a medium to full body, again I was expecting fuller. It's a bit of a weird one. I like the beer because it's not too full on with the coffee flavour, but I can appreciate the Starbucks and Costa lovers among you may be disappointed by that. I'm going to give Costa Rican Coffee Extra Porter 7.5 out of 10. I found this beer really pleasant and I'd happily drink it again, however for the real strong coffee lovers out there you may well find it a little too mild for your taste.
