I think Black Magic from Oakham Ales is my third review from the Peterborough based brewery and there will be another one coming soon. As I was in The Bumble Inn, one of the best pubs in Peterborough it would have felt rude to turn down a pint of this local chocolate porter, I do love chocolate beers after all. Clocking in at 5% Black Magic has a distinctly average alcohol content that wont do you too much damage in moderation. The beer pours a seriously dark black with a small just off white head so I guess it's fair to say it looks like every other chocolate porter out there, which isn't a bad thing as I think they're great looking beers.
Black Magic from Oakham Ales has a mild chocolate aroma but not a great deal else going on to be honest. As expected the body is fairly full and the texture is nice and smooth, but that's the very least you expect from a porter. While the taste is pleasant, and there's certainly chocolate notes they don't really come through strongly enough to excite anyone, maybe I needed to let the beer warm up a bit more before drinking it, or maybe it's just a bit plain. With so many really opulent chocolate beers around these days this feels a bit tame in comparison. I'm going to give Black Magic from Oakham Ales 6 out of 10. It's nice enough, but it's not magical.
