5 Lamps are a Dublin based brewery who don't go over the top with their beer names hence this red ale is 5 Lamps Red Ale. I had this beer in Church Bar, which is one of the best bars in Dublin. Just for the record church bar is exactly what it sounds like, a bar in a church, it's quite cool. 5 Lamps have been brewing for nearly a decade now and I think this is the first of their beers I've tried. Red Ale from 5 Lamps pours a very standard red ale red with a small head that hangs around surprisingly well given its size.
Like most red ales this one doesn't really smell of a great deal but there's a few toffee notes just about coming through. The feel is reasonably light and refreshing, but maybe that's just because I was drinking it in Ireland as an alternative to the black stuff. To be fair the taste isn't bad. There's some toffee and caramel notes making it a reasonably sweet beer. I'm not even sure if you can get Red Ale outside of Ireland, but it's not a huge loss if not. Like most red beers it's nice enough, but I never find that they taste of a great deal, and this is no exception. I'm going to give Red Ale from 5 Lamps Brewery 6 out of 10.
